Australia passes same-sex marriage bill, Victoria legalize voluntary assisted dying
The bill to legalize same-sex marriage has passed the Australian Senate on Wednesday. The bill is expected to pass easily next week by the House of Representatives, fulfilling the Turnbull government’s promise to expedite a marriage equality bill in the event of a yes vote and constitutionalize the historic social reform before Christmas. On the contrary, Australia’s Victoria has become the first state in the country to legalize assisted dying for the terminally ill by giving the ailing patients a chance to access a lethal drug within 10 days of asking to die, after completing a three-step process involving two independent medical analysis. The legislation will now go through an 18-month implementation period before it comes into effect from mid 2019. However, the scheme is only eligible for patients having a timeframe of 12 to 6 months to live and it also requires the person to have lived in Victoria for at least 12 months before being able to request for assisted dying. The cause of death recorded in the death certificates for those who will implement this scheme will have the reason of choosing voluntary assisted dying instead of their illness.
