The number of acid attacks is on the increase in the UK and as well as the number of victims. A group of survivors from Bangladesh have flown in to phase a charity fashion show in London to raise awareness of acid violence against women. The majority of victims in UK are men, but still women are the main targets of acid attack in Bangladesh. ActionAid Bangladesh Country Director Farah Kabir says, “Its part of the gender based violence where men are trying to control or manifest their power. We live in a very patriarchal society.” She also said, “Generally acid survivors are portrayed with the misery and people feel sorry and pity and then forget about it. So, we wanted to bring out the inner beauty because when they have survived and they have continued living with such visible scars and it’s not just the scar on the face, it’s deep inside. We wanted to portray on the beauty in them.”All the women suffered immense and traumatic acts of violence but show like this will help people apprehend these women as survivors. Fashion Designer Bibi Russell says, “I would want them to see the sparkle, their strength and their courage.” Bibi also said, “My models are all survivors and it’s really an honor and a pleasure for me to show the world the inner strength of these people.”
