Bangladesh’s gradual decline in human capital index

Sabah Mannan

Among 130 countries, Bangladesh’s position has dropped to 111th this year in the human capital index, reports 71 news. Bangladesh stood at the 104th position last year and at the 99th position on 2015. Like every year, World Economic Forum has released ‘Global Human Capital Report-2017’. The report highlighted that Bangladesh is lagging behind due to weakness in education sector especially because of the poor standard of primary education. Among South Asian countries, Sri Lanka stands at 70 while Nepal is positioned at 98. Other than these two countries, India is at the 103rd position and Pakistan is on the 125th position. Bangladesh has made significant progress in achieving some goals of Education for All but it needs to focus on the quality of education and early childhood development which can contribute to human capital.
