We have started our Scandinavian holiday from Sweden. From there we travelled to Norway and then to Denmark. In the middle of our holiday my wife & I had caught flu somehow. My son was safe as he had flu jab in his school. Apparently, there was a massive outbreak of flu that season in that Scandinavian region and we were one of the victims among many more tourist travelling without flu vaccinations.

That was for the first time we had to visit a doctor in the middle of a holiday. So, we were going slow in Norway. After a couple of relaxed days in Bergen, this was the moment for the Fjord Excursion. This includes a Fjord Cruise & Flåm Railway journey. We embarked on a full day excursion into the Norwegian fjord region. We bought a package ticket from the tourist office and the advisor lady informed us abundantly what to do and what not to as well!he railway station was walking distance from our apartment hotel. When we have started for the hotel, we found that this was raining suddenly. That made us really sad as we thought this is going to wash-out our day. Later the weather was also welcoming to us with full sunshine and clean sky.We didn’t even expect that in just one day we be able to experience such some stunning sceneries. Our early morning journey started by train from Bergen to Voss. This was really an ordinary journey, our expectation levels were slowing going down! Just after arriving Voss, we have seen some beautiful mountain landscape. From that moment we knew that something outstanding is waiting for us. From there we board a bus to Gudvangen. On the way, we have experienced Stalheimskleiva, with its 13 steep hairpin bends. This track is only open during the summer and sometimes gets really scary. Then the bus entered the beautiful Nærøy Valley. The bus stopped at a ferry terminal as we had to take a small ship to continue to the next phase of the trip. This is a cruise route along the Nærøyfjord to Flåm. The Nærøyfjord is the narrowest fjord channel in Europe and has recently been added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Surrounded by towering mountains up to 1,700 metres high, this arm of the Sognefjord is amazingly beautiful. The Nærøyfjord is 20 km long, only 250 metres across at its narrowest and a mere 12 metres at its shallowest.

The surrounding mountains reach heights of 1,660 metres, and the fjord is one of the multiple highlights on several of that tour. During the cruise on the Nærøyfjord, we had excellent views of small traditional farms on the mountainsides. In Flåm we had some time enjoy the lunch before boarding the Flåm Railway, which passes through wild and beautiful mountain scenery with waterfalls and steep mountain sides up to a height of 900 metres. There is no other adhesion railway in the world running on normal tracks that are so steep over a long distance. This is known as the world’s most beautiful train. In the course of approximately 2 hours, we have experience lush fjord landscapes, steep mountains, spectacular waterfalls and snow-covered mountains. The last part of the excursion was by train from Myrdal and back again to Bergen. This was one of those days that we will never forget and we would love to go back to Norwegian Fjords again & again. We will recommend Bergen to everyone with one caution – Norway is not cheap and those trips are really expensive! Although at the end of the trip you will never regret!
