Meet the Indian women sailing round the world

An all-women team from the Indian navy are about to embark on a historic mission to sail around the world, source BBC. Their voyage will be the first Indian circumnavigation of the globe by a female crew, and the team wants to inspire other women.These women could be able to make history. They are going to try sailing around the world. If they succeed, they’ll be the first female crew from India to do so. Lt. Cdr. Vartika Joshi (skipper) said that they have been training since the last two years as a team. She also talked about her initial days in the training where they were just trying to build up a team. But now after coming a long way that have been successful. They are very excited and currently a lot of preparations are going on to get the boat ready for the long voyage.All six members of the crew are officers in the Indian navy so working as a team has come naturally. They will attempt the voyage on INSV Tarini which is a brand new 56ft (17m) vessel. They want to make sailing more appealing. Lt. Cdr. Patarapalli Swathi said that people often ask why sailing is not so popular in India. She then replied that it’s not popular because it’s very expensive. She also said they all have maritime history and everyone is experienced in the field of sailing. During their seven months at sea, they will travel 21,600 nautical miles. They plan to travel from Goa to Cape Town. The team wants their journey to inspire. Lt. Cdr. Pratibha Jamwal said that maybe people will change their perception about women and probably have more faith in them. If she can do it then many people can also achieve this.
