37.5% Dams Almost Out of Order

Water Development Board (WDB) statistics show, there are 19.2 thousand kilometers of water-dam in the country. While, about 68% are just soil dams. Also, 7.2 thousand kilometers of dams are high risk and out of order for transportation purposes.
Only, 8.42 thousand kilometers of dams cover 70 zones for preventing flood. Again, 4.14 thousand kilometers have roads above them. Unfortunately, about 2 thousand kilometers roads are possessed by public service authorities.
Ministry of Water Resource, Senior Secretary Dr. Jafar Ahmed assured that, they are working on releasing dams & roads on them from illegal possessions, as per guidance by PM.
WDB General Director Engr. Md. Mahfuzur Rahman acknowledged about the poor condition of the flood preventing dams. Then, also assured that, they are working increasing the height, effectiveness & accessibility of those dams as well. That, WDB field officers are already working at the sites.
Most of these mentioned dams were made in 60’s. Some of the dams even cannot be spotted, though those exist in papers. Even, some dam developments projects dissolved within corruption.
