Outdated House Rent Control Law – 1991, proving to be very much ineffective in protecting consumer rights, believes Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB). Most do not even know about this law exist. Again, there isn’t any rules against the violation of its codes.

High Court even instructed to create a commission to renovate this law within 6 months. Sadly, two years passed and nothing has been done yet. Writ Lawyer Manzil Morshed said, this is equivalent to court violation.

CAB estimates 90% citizens are floating at the will of landlords. Families that are renting also complain that, they have to abide by every rules of their landlords. Some even have to get permission to bring guests or to arrange a family event.

Most grieves that, half of the month’s salary goes away only to pay the rent. Landlords charge multiple month’s payment beforehand, while moving in. Also they keep increasing it monthly or yearly and by any amount they please. Statistics show, house rents in Dhaka have quadruplet in past 10 years.
