A suspected robber was arrested after a gunfight with police in Niribili area under Ashulia police station, on the outskirts of the capital early Saturday.

Rezaul Haq, officer-in-charge of the police station, said a gang of robbers stormed the rod-cement shop of  Shamim Hossain, a former commissioner of Savar municipality, and tried to loot valuables around 3 am.

At one stage, a patrol team of police challenged them.

Sensing danger, the robbers opened fire at police prompting the law enforcers to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.

Both robbers and police exchanged gunshots for half an hour.

Later, police detained one of them while the others managed to flee the scene.

However, none was injured in the gunfight
